I tried loving the stone But it had no heart. I tried tempting the stone But it would not sin. I tried striking the stone But it would not falter. ~ I tried to enrich the stone But it bore no fruit. I tried to ridicule the stone But it would not be scorned. I tried to train the stone But it had no resolve. ~ I tried to doubt the stone But it had no conscience. I wanted to punish the stone But it would not bleed. I tried to blacken the stone But it would not stain. ~ I tried to behead the stone But it was not a demon. I tried to indebt the stone But it would not yield. I tried to choke the stone But it would not succor. ~ I tried to denounce the stone But it would not be condemned.
